Helping businesses go green

A new masterclass has been launched to help businesses across Sussex maximise the benefits of going green.

5 September 2017

The 九色视频’s Green Growth Platform has joined forces with sustainability consultancy Greenmetrics and events provider Muon Events to run ‘Sustainability in Action’, a half-day event in Crawley on 2 October.

The masterclass covers social, environmental and economic aspects of business, and will help delegates to manage the associated risks and opportunities, reduce costs and build their reputation.

It has been designed for small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs), giving them practical tools to navigate the complex and increasingly important subject of sustainability, demystifying the jargon and aligning it with business strategy.

The masterclass will cover:

  • Why sustainability is important, and how to develop a compelling business case and straightforward action plan for sustainability
  • An overview of relevant standards and legislation, plus the value of formally certified or informal management systems and the latest best practice case studies
  • How to get best results – engaging stakeholders and employees
  • Drafting a communications strategy with an authentic narrative to build reputation as a responsible business.

Susie Howells, of sustainability consultancy Greenmetrics, said: “SMEs represent over 99 per cent of UK businesses, employing around 60 per cent of the workforce and contributing over £1.8bn (around 47 per cent) to our economy.

“There is huge scope for smaller businesses to address some of society’s challenges and to reap the benefits of sustainable business: saving money, building reputation, preventing harm to people and the environment - and keeping on the right side of the law.

“I’ve found that smaller businesses sometimes struggle to engage with sustainability, mainly because it’s hard to find the time, money or opportunity to learn; with the perception that it’s nice to do, but too difficult with the pressures of business. This course is designed to address this, and to equip managers with the skills they need to integrate important issues into everyday decision-making.”

The course, held at Crawley Library, included a personalised pre and post-event review for each delegate. Further masterclasses will be run on 17 January, 21 March and 5 June 2018.
