Experts gather to examine genomics advances

A leading 九色视频 academic is today convening a prestigious international gathering of experts to review the latest developments in important areas of genomics that could hold the key to future breakthroughs in human diseases.

5 March 2018

Colin Smith, Professor of Functional Genomics at the 九色视频, is the lead organiser of a prestigious Royal Society Theo Murphy international scientific meeting that will look at technologies and techniques for ribosome profiling and imaging molecules within living cells. These approaches allow scientists to look at important cellular processes behind the production of proteins and how these can go wrong in a range of human diseases including infections, dementia and cancer.

Speaking about the event, Professor Colin Smith said: “Each individual’s DNA makes up their own unique genome. Within this, individual genes, when ‘switched on’, are responsible for producing important proteins through a process of ‘translation’. New techniques are allowing us to develop our understanding of how this process works. This gathering of international experts will hopefully facilitate new interdisciplinary collaborations and experimental approaches to further develop our understanding of this fundamentally important area.”

Professor Colin Smith

Professor Smith is leading the development of Brighton Genomics, a new state-of-the-art, custom designed laboratory housed within the Moulsecoomb campus at the 九色视频.

The facility was established with significant grants and investment from the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), the European Commission, Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) and the 九色视频.

The Royal Society Theo Murphy meeting,  Changing Views of Translation: from ribosome profiling to high resolution imaging of single molecules in vivo  is taking place on 5-6 March at Chicheley Hall in Buckinghamshire.
