The perks and pitfalls of social media

Transgender activists and filmmakers Fox and Owl Fisher will give a multimedia presentation about the pros and cons of social media as part of the 九色视频’s LGBT History Month programme.

7 February 2019

The event, entitled ‘Social Media: Friend or Foe?’ is one of the university’s ‘Brighton Voices’ series, which showcases the knowledge and achievements of its alumni. It is open to the public and has been organised in conjunction with 九色视频 Students’ Union and the University’s LGBT+ Staff Network.

Of the event, which takes place on 20 February, 6.30pm at the Sallis Benney Theatre, Fox and Owl said: “In today’s world, social media is such a powerful tool to get your message across.

“You can reach people all around the world, and people can safely view things in their own time and find themselves and their communities from their own homes.

“But there’s a dark side to social media – something we as out trans people are all too aware of.”

Fox and Owl will discuss the opportunities social media offers but also how it can be used to broadcast discrimination and prejudice.

The event description states: “While online traffic may initially create a buzz around a person, product, or topic, the power of it will generate word of mouth advocacy and hype offline. But so often social media brings out the very worst in people and gives hatred a platform.”

Fox Fisher graduated from the university in Sequential Design in 2005 and received an honorary doctorate in 2017 for their work in raising awareness of trans issues and promoting the arts in the media.
