  • A fashion show with a twist

A fashion show with a twist

Students and staff from Computer Science for Games and Fashion with Business Studies degrees united to create a catwalk show like no other.

21 June 2019

The cutting-edge virtual reality experience, entitled Fashion 360 VR, was developed over four months with the objective of providing an immersive new way to experience fashion students’ collections.

Via a VR headset, users could view a digital runway show featuring models displaying the students’ distinctive designs. The technology was available for visitors to use during the Graduate Show at the university’s City campus and was then on display at in London.

The university’s Dr Panagiotis Fotaris was heavily involved in developing the project. He said it showed Brighton students had “the potential to lead the way in VR advances”.

He said: “Interest in virtual reality has exploded in the last few years and as the technology continues to improve it may change the way we consume fashion forever.

“Graduation Fashion Week was a great opportunity for our Games and Fashion students to join forces and collaborate with our central media services to create an immersive experience. The 360-degree video received overwhelmingly positive responses from the audience.

“Participants call this multidisciplinary project a year highlight as it harnessed the diversity of their experiences and backgrounds to develop a cutting-edge product, which is especially useful in the era of global competition to create innovative value.”

“Computer Science for Games students Rowan Spencer and Scott Finlayson were Executive Producer and Assistant Producer and Web Developer for the project respectively.

The university's Central Media Services team played a pivotal role, creating the 360 green-screen environment in their TV studio. They also filmed the fashion models in that environment using a 360 camera and edited the footage to create the final VR film which was then "screened" for the VR headsets.”

Dr Fotaris added that a new VR collaboration will be undertaken, with plans to be confirmed.

The B19 Fashion Portfolio Website is an extension of the Fashion 360 VR project. Computer Science for Games students have created a series of web templates, creating individual websites for each fashion student portfolio, collection write-ups and CVs.
