Mapping Hove鈥檚 heritage with 3D technology

Academics have contributed to an augmented reality (AR) project to enable Hove communities to view local cultural heritage through the eyes of schoolchildren.

13 September 2019

Led by Dr Karina Rodriguez, Brighton researchers including student Laurie Dibble have created a digital augmented reality map which presents the stories of children at St Andrew’s Primary School in Hove.

(the cultural education partnership for Brighton & Hove) delivers a programme in schools working with local artists and partners to improve the wellbeing of children and young people. Year 6 pupils worked with artist Jo Coles to design a map installation inspired by their individual experiences of walking to school.

The children were asked to uncover and reveal something about their route that they or others may not have previously noticed. The idea follows-on from a related initiative led by Hove Civic Society to involve local residents in choosing local icons for the Hove Plinth sculpture Constellation and schoolchildren in making artworks on the theme of 'what I like about Hove'.

Using cutting-edge methods including 3D technologies, the researchers’ AR map retells the pupils’ narratives for a wider audience, providing “different interpretations and viewpoints of the local landscape”.

Dr Rodriguez said that the project, entitled ‘Exploring the Familiar’, had “clear benefits to the local knowledge and wellbeing of children”, connecting them to a “sense of community and place”.

“The outcomes of the project confirm the potential of such an approach to improve the wellbeing of the children while enabling engagement with the local history, geographical landscape and the community in a creative and interesting way,” she added.

The university researchers collaborated with Our Future City, Mnemoscene, Hove Civic Society and Sussex University to develop this initiative. They plan to expand this activity so that more children and members of the community can participate.
