University celebrates race equality award

The 九色视频 celebrated that it is to receive a Race Equality Charter Bronze Award becoming one of only 13 universities to hold the award.

15 November 2019

The Bronze Award, , recognises the fact that the university has demonstrated that it has established an institutional base on which to eliminate racial inequalities and develop an inclusive culture that values all staff and students.

The university’s award submission was the result of two years’ work and informed by an analysis of staff and student data, the results of Race Equality surveys and feedback from focus groups and forums.

Welcoming the news of the award, Professor Andrew Lloyd, Pro-Vice Chancellor for Academic Operations said: “We are delighted to have been awarded the Race Equality Charter Bronze Award which recognises the university’s commitment to understanding and addressing racial inequality across the institution. As we deliver our action plan, we will progressively challenge ourselves to ensure that we develop an embedded inclusive culture. This will not only provide support to some of our key strategic priorities as an institution, but will also provide universal improvements in our learning and working environment for our students and staff.”

Momtaz Rahman, the university’s Equality and Diversity Adviser and Race Equality Charter lead said: “The award is a great recognition of the hard work by many colleagues but we are aware that there is more to be done before we are where we want to be as a university. Our action plan offers a strong basis for us to address racial inequalities across the university and move towards becoming a more inclusive institution to improve the lived experiences for BAME staff and students.”

The university’s action plan commits to a number of priorities including improving the representation of BAME staff in key decision-making bodies, improving BAME career progression into senior positions, improving the representation of race in the curriculum and reducing differential outcomes for BAME students.

The new award will be presented at a national awards ceremony to be hosted by the 九色视频 in December.
