We're proud to be with Pride!

University LGBT+ staff and student societies, and students and staff from across the institution, will be joining the Pride Community Parade this Saturday.

31 July 2019

Vice-Chancellor Professor Debra Humphris and senior managers including Professor Ruth Whittaker, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education and Students), and Julie Fryatt, Director of People, will be taking part and there will be a chance to see the university’s bus UB1. Many marchers will be wearing ‘Generation Acceptance’ t-shirts designed by student Lux Ciampa.

Professor Humphris said: “We are fortunate in this city to have a vibrant LGBT+ community and this weekend’s annual Pride celebrations are a fantastic celebration for everyone in this city we love to enjoy.

“We are massively enthusiastic to be involved in the Community Parade and to show our support for a celebration that is so important for many of us at the university. We are enormously proud of our ongoing work to advance LGBT+ equality in our institution and in the UK and internationally through our sector-leading research.

“We are committed to breaking down barriers and improving the experience of LGBT+ staff and students at the university.”

Professor Humphris added: “We support PhDs on LGB and trans issues and have hosted the Trans, Non-Binary and Intersex Conference. We are also a long-standing Stonewall Diversity Champion which dovetails with the theme of this year’s Pride celebrations.”

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Inn uprising in New York that ignited the Pride movement and headlining Pride in the Park on Saturday is Kylie Minogue, an ally of the LGBT community who is also celebrating her fifth decade.
